We all adore birds, and painting them can be a joyful experience, yet sometimes they feel tricky to capture and end up looking heavy or lifeless. You only need a single brush and a handful of paint colors to create this sweet artwork. For my painting, I used turquoise blue, cadmium red, quinacridone gold, and permanent rose. A free downloadable sketch of this painting is also available.

I recommend using a Kuretake waterbrush, which works wonderfully for keeping the strokes light, soft, and airy.

For this piece, I worked in a Viviva sketchbook. The paper in these sketchbooks is substantial, about 130lb, perfect for watercolor—it holds the pigment well without excessive bleeding or soaking. Viviva sketchbooks come in several sizes; I used the A5, roughly half of a letter-sized sheet, making it compact and ideal for painting on the go.

One of my favorite paint options is the Viviva colorsheets, a relatively new product that I highly recommend trying. They’re perfect for capturing the delicate, light tones of little birds and are convenient for carrying wherever you paint.
