Painting a Bold Desert Sunset in Watercolor

For brushes, synthetic and sable-blend options work beautifully. A large wash brush, a medium round brush, and a medium flat brush are all you'll need for this painting.

Painting Process

Step 1: Prepare Your Paper and Paints

Trim your watercolor paper to your preferred dimensions and securely tape all four sides to a sturdy board. Be sure to leave enough painted area to fit within your mat if you plan to frame the artwork later.

Squeeze the watercolor paints into separate wells of your palette and mix each color with water until smooth. Avoid thick paint clumps that could interfere with your washes. Prepare enough paint in advance so you won't run out while working.

Lightly sketch the palm trees and trunks with a pencil.

Using Payne's Gray and the edge of a medium flat brush, paint the palm fronds. The paint mixture should be thick enough to hold its shape; overly diluted paint will not produce crisp marks.

Press the flat edge of the brush against the paper to form the main sections of the fronds. Then use a corner of the brush to pull outward strokes that create the individual leaf segments.

Use the flat side of the brush again to paint slender palm trunks. Small angled strokes added with the brush corner can create the textured ridges and details along the trunks.
