The Eiffel Tower was built between 1887 and 1889 using innovative engineering methods that were considered groundbreaking for the time. Despite its enormous scale, the project was completed in just over two years with a relatively small workforce. The tower was designed by the renowned French engineer Gustave Eiffel, who applied his expertise in bridge construction and metal framework design to create one of the world's most recognizable landmarks.

Constructed mainly from wrought iron arranged in an open-lattice pattern, the tower combined strength, stability, and visual elegance. This approach reduced the overall weight of the structure while allowing it to withstand strong winds and other environmental forces. The result was a design that appeared both light and impressive despite its massive size.

The tower rises from four large lattice-supported legs that gradually curve inward before merging into a single vertical structure. These supports are linked by horizontal frameworks at two major levels, which also function as observation platforms for visitors. At ground level, four graceful semicircular arches connect the legs. Although often perceived as structural elements, these arches were included primarily for decorative purposes and do not contribute significantly to the tower’s stability.

One of the most challenging aspects of the project involved designing elevators capable of traveling along the curved paths created by the tower’s inclined legs. This engineering problem was solved by the American company Otis, which developed specially designed glass-enclosed elevators that could safely and efficiently transport passengers upward through the unique structure.

Upon its completion, the Eiffel Tower reached a height of 300 meters (984 feet), becoming the tallest man-made structure in the world. It retained this title for four decades until New York City's Chrysler Building surpassed it in 1929. The tower was originally constructed as the grand entrance to the 1889 International Exposition in Paris, an event organized to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Today, it remains one of the most celebrated achievements in architectural and engineering history.
