A Landmark Achievement in Railroad Bridge Construction

The Rockville Stone Arch Bridge was the third bridge constructed at this location to carry railroad traffic over the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. With its impressive dimensions of 3,820 feet long and 52 feet wide, it is recognized as one of the largest stone arch railroad bridges ever built.

As an important connection along the railroad route between New York City and Pittsburgh, the bridge was designed to support four railway tracks. Today, it continues to serve major rail operations, including Norfolk Southern and Amtrak services.

The Peak of Pennsylvania Railroad’s Bridge Program

During the late 19th century, the Pennsylvania Railroad launched an ambitious effort to replace vulnerable wooden and iron bridges with stronger and more permanent stone and concrete structures. The Rockville Stone Arch Bridge represented the greatest success of this modernization program.

The bridge also marked a major step forward in American stone arch engineering. Its design included 48 individual arches, each spanning 70 feet across the Susquehanna River. By replacing a major crossing obstacle along one of the country’s busiest rail routes, the bridge greatly improved the efficiency and reliability of the Pennsylvania Railroad system.

Design and Construction Features

The Rockville Stone Arch Bridge was built using a combination of stone arches and a concrete interior core covered with stone facing. This construction method was inspired by the durability and appearance of ancient Roman aqueducts.

Designed for long-term service, the bridge has remained functional for more than a century. It has successfully endured severe flooding events and continued operating despite the dramatic increase in train weights and transportation demands over the years.

Earlier Bridges at the Same Location

Before the Rockville Stone Arch Bridge was built, two earlier structures occupied the same crossing site.

The first was a wooden railroad bridge completed in 1850. Based on the Howe truss design with additional Burr arches, the structure carried a single railroad track and consisted of 23 spans with a total length of approximately 3,670 feet.

In 1877, the wooden bridge was replaced by an iron bridge designed for two tracks. As railroad traffic expanded and heavier trains became common, the Pennsylvania Railroad determined that a more durable and larger structure was needed, leading to the construction of the Rockville Stone Arch Bridge.

A Lasting Symbol of Engineering Excellence

The Rockville Stone Arch Bridge remains an outstanding example of 19th-century engineering innovation. Combining strength, functionality, and architectural beauty, it represents the transformation of American railroad infrastructure from temporary wooden structures to permanent stone and concrete landmarks.
