The Hidden Origins and Spectacular Global History of the Resilient Camel
The prehistoric ancestors of the camel family actually originated in North America. Paleontologists have discovered many diverse fossils of early camel prototypes across the continent. These ancient creatures appeared in a massive variety of shapes and sizes. The smallest ancestral models were only the physical size of a modern rabbit. In sharp contrast the largest varieties stood a staggering four and a half meters tall at the shoulder. This maximum height is equal to roughly fifteen feet.

The Great Migration and the Split Into Different Species
These North American camels eventually began a massive geographic migration. Some groups traveled south into what we now call South America. Other populations ventured northwest toward the frozen region of modern day Alaska. These northern animals successfully crossed into Asia. They utilized an ancient land bridge that connected the two continents during that era. These creatures gradually evolved over time into the modern Bactrian camel.
The famous Arabian camel only appeared just over six thousand years ago. Experts believe that ancient Asian tribes specially bred this one humped variety. They created this domesticated form directly from the two humped Bactrian camel. These nomadic people left no written records of their agricultural success. The earliest known historical reference to a one humped camel exists on an ancient piece of Egyptian pottery. This artifact dates back to approximately three thousand BC.
The Unique Development of South American Camelids
The camels that migrated into South America never developed large humps on their backs. However their ancestral origin remains completely unmistakable. Anyone can easily see the family connection by studying the head of a modern llama. Its facial features look remarkably similar to those of a true camel.
The South American branch of the camel family consists of four distinct members. Two of these unique species are fully domesticated by humans. The other two varieties still survive as wild animals. The domesticated forms are the famous llama and the fluffy alpaca. Local people use the sturdy llama primarily as a reliable pack animal. They also breed the creature for its thick wool and tender meat. They even dry its dung to use as a vital fuel source in high altitude regions where timber is scarce. Farmers breed the alpaca exclusively for its superb and luxurious wool. Ancient weavers once used this premium alpaca fiber to create magnificent royal robes for Inca noblemen.
The majestic guanaco serves as a prominent wild member of this South American quartet. This resilient species still survives in healthy numbers today. They roam comfortably through the high mountains of Peru and Ecuador. They also populate the rugged hills and vast plains of Patagonia.
The beautiful vicuna holds the proud title of the absolute smallest member of the entire camel family. This miniature animal stands only ninety centimeters or thirty inches tall at the shoulder. It typically weighs no more than fifty kilograms which is equal to about one hundred and ten pounds. These creatures were once widespread across the highest plains of the Andes mountains. However over hunting by humans severely reduced their wild numbers. Careful legal protection and intense conservation efforts have successfully saved this species from the absolute brink of total extinction. Despite this recovery the vicuna must still be regarded as a threatened wild animal that requires full environmental protection.
