Growing Conditions and Care

Although balloon flowers are often recommended for full sun, they can also perform well in areas with less sunlight. They may emerge slowly in spring, but once a mature clump is established, they are easy to locate and maintain.

The species Platycodon grandiflorus typically produces blue flowers and grows around 24 to 36 inches tall, while other cultivars are available with pink or white blooms. Regardless of the variety, balloon flower is an excellent choice for cottage-style gardens.

Its moderate height makes it suitable for the middle or back sections of flower borders. The sturdy stems usually remain upright without much support, and the soft flower colors blend beautifully with many companion plants.
