Artist Creates Stunning Paper Animal Sculptures

Paper, when compared to other artistic materials, is incredibly delicate. It tears under minimal pressure, disintegrates in water, and creases if folded incorrectly. Paper, when compared to other artistic materials, is incredibly delicate. It tears under minimal pressure, disintegrates in water, and creases if folded incorrectly. Yet, its fragility belies its versatility, as shown in the work of Thiên Dinh. Through careful manipulation, Dinh transforms fragile sheets into lifelike birds, slender fish, scaly dragons, and more.

Perhaps the pinnacle of Dinh’s mastery can be seen in his recent betta fish sculptures. Over hundreds of hours, the Vietnamese artist meticulously shaped, ruffled, and sliced plain paper to achieve astonishing realism. Each fish displays flowing tails that catch sunlight and appear almost translucent, replicating the delicate fin texture of real fish. Their scales are crafted with precision, layered along the curves of the bodies to enhance the sense of movement and life. Dinh even brought these creatures to life through AI animation.

In another playful project, Dinh introduced a cockatoo sculpture to a local office setting. Similar to the betta fish, this bird features intricately cut paper feathers, each detail carved with an X-acto knife. The same technique appears in Vũ Giao—Điệu múa giao mùa (translated as Mid-Season Dance), which portrays a large peacock adorned with tiny gems. Created to commemorate Vietnam’s Independence Day on September 2, 2025, the peacock symbolizes creativity, fortune, and prosperity according to Dinh.

Over the summer, Dinh pushed his imagination even further with a dragon sculpture, blending features from his previous works. The creature combines fish scales, bird feathers, reptilian claws, and deer antlers, forming a fantastical yet believable chimera. Despite its mythical elements, every detail maintains a sense of realism.

“Just paper? Think again,” Dinh remarked about the sculpture. “Every scale, every claw, every curve—crafted by hand with obsession. This isn’t just a dragon. It’s patience, madness, and a thousand precise cuts.”

Thiên Dinh’s Instagram showcases even more of his extraordinary paper creations, demonstrating his incredible skill at recreating feathers, scales, claws, and more across a variety of animals. While fish and birds are his favorites, his repertoire also includes astonishing hybrid creatures like dragons.
